Alnwick and the coast

Helicopter charter to Alnwick, Bamburgh and the coast

Alnwick Castle, the castle at Bamburgh and a long run of beaches make north Northumberland one of the most visited corners of England.

  • Eshott Airfield, a short drive south of Alnwick, is the nearest airfield we can confirm from its own pages
  • We can look at a landing closer to your hotel or event, but only with the owner’s permission and a suitable site, and we have not found any castle, garden or Alnwick hotel that says it takes helicopters
  • Stay over: a helicopter leaves when you are ready, so there is no need to rush the return
  • Tell us where you are staying and we plan the landing and the car

Hexham, Newcastle and Hadrian’s Wall

Helicopter charter to Matfen Hall, Hexham and Newcastle

Matfen Hall, near Hexham, publishes its own helicopter landing arrangements, and Newcastle Airport is the region’s main hub.

  • Matfen Hall’s own page says helicopters land on the lawn, in daylight only, by booking with the hotel, and that non-residents pay a landing fee
  • For the airport and the flight to Newcastle, read our page on helicopter charter to Newcastle
  • Hadrian’s Wall, Hexham and Kielder Water and Forest Park are all within reach of a landing at Matfen or Newcastle by car
  • We confirm the booking, the landing times and the fee with the hotel for your date

Where we can land

Landing sites in Northumberland

These come from each place’s own website. Hours and fees change, so we check them again for your date, and every landing is subject to permission.

Eshott Airfield

Its own contact page says prior permission is required for all helicopter traffic. The pilot information page gives operating hours of 09:00 to 19:00, and the airfield offers Jet A1 refuelling by arrangement. It lies a short drive south of Alnwick.

Matfen Hall, near Hexham

The hotel’s own page says helicopters land on the lawn, in daylight only, and that landings are booked by phone with the hotel. Non-residents pay a landing and take-off fee.

Newcastle International Airport

The region’s main airport. Its private-aircraft arrangements are agreed in advance and we handle that for you. Read helicopter charter to Newcastle.

Alnwick Castle and Garden

Neither the castle nor the garden says it accepts helicopters, so we do not plan a landing there. We land at an airfield or a confirmed site and a car takes you in.

Berwick-upon-Tweed

We have not found a confirmed helicopter landing site in Berwick, so we look at each request individually.

A private site

Landing at an estate or a hotel needs the owner’s permission and a suitable site, and we ask for both for you. Read can a helicopter land at my venue?

Before you fly

What to know before flying to Northumberland

Where we land

We agree the landing site with you when you book, and ask the site for permission. Every landing is subject to permission and site suitability, and we always agree a plan B.

Luggage and weights

Soft-sided bags fit a helicopter hold better than hard suitcases. Tell us how many bags you have, and each passenger’s weight, when you book, and we will confirm that everything fits.

Weather

Helicopters fly in suitable weather only. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing, and we will work with you on the earliest alternative. Check conditions on our Battersea Heliport weather page. See also helicopter charter and the weather.

Timing and booking ahead

Arrive at the London Heliport 10 minutes before departure. Book as early as you can for spring and summer weekends, and earlier for groups or larger helicopters.

A car at the other end

Our partner Executive Global Travel can meet you with a chauffeur car, timed to the helicopter, so if the flight moves, the car moves with it.

Getting to the heliport

The London Heliport is on the south bank of the Thames at Bridges Court, Battersea SW11 3BE. See getting there and the opening hours.

Questions

Helicopter charter to Northumberland: your questions answered

Still unsure? Call +44 20 7781 8094 any time.

How long does a helicopter from London to Alnwick take?

About 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 10 in the air, depending on the helicopter, the routing, the wind and where you land. Add 10 minutes to arrive at the heliport before departure.

How much does a helicopter to Northumberland cost?

The price changes with the helicopter, the date, how many of you are flying, if you stay overnight and the landing fees. A return with an overnight stay is priced differently from a same-day return, so tell us your plan and we send one clear quote. See helicopter hire prices for examples of other routes.

Where can a helicopter land near Alnwick?

The airfield we can confirm is Eshott Airfield, a short drive south of Alnwick, which asks for prior permission for all helicopters. A landing closer in needs the owner’s permission and a suitable site, which we ask for.

Can a helicopter land at Alnwick Castle?

The castle and the garden do not say they accept helicopters, so we do not plan a landing there. We land at an airfield or a confirmed site and arrange a car.

Can I land at Matfen Hall?

The hotel’s own page says helicopters can land on the lawn, in daylight only, by booking with the hotel, and that non-residents pay a fee. We confirm the booking for your date.

Can I fly there and back on the same day?

It is possible, but it makes a long day, and the daylight limits the sites, so most guests stay a night and fly back the next day. Tell us the dates and we plan around sunset.

Is a helicopter quicker than the train?

Yes. A helicopter takes under two hours in the air, and leaves when you are ready, where the East Coast main line and the road both take most of a day. The helicopter also lands near where you are staying.

Can you carry golf clubs, shooting equipment or luggage for a weekend?

Usually, yes. Tell us what you are bringing and each passenger’s weight when you book, and we confirm the right helicopter. Soft bags fit the hold better than hard cases.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing. We work with you to find the earliest suitable alternative. See helicopter charter and the weather.

How many people can you carry?

The AS355 carries up to 5 passengers, the Agusta 109 Grand up to 6 and the H145 up to 8. For larger parties we can use more than one helicopter.
