Golf, Gleneagles and St Andrews

Helicopter charter to Gleneagles and St Andrews

Gleneagles and St Andrews are two of the best-known names in golf, and both are a long way from London.

  • Gleneagles’ own travel page says arrangements can be made to land helicopters at the hotel, and we agree the details with the hotel for your date
  • The 155th Open is at the Old Course, St Andrews, with the organiser listing 11 to 18 July 2027, and its page makes no statement about helicopters
  • We do not plan a landing at the Old Course or inside the Open grounds, and we look at nearby options for you
  • Dundee Airport, run by the Highlands and Islands Airports group, is the nearest airport to St Andrews that has a general aviation page

Edinburgh and the Highlands

Helicopter charter to Edinburgh, Perthshire and the Highlands

Edinburgh is the quickest Scottish city to reach, and the Highlands lie beyond it.

  • The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs from 6 to 28 August 2027, according to the organiser, and its page says nothing about helicopters
  • Inverness Airport’s own general aviation page lists its ground handlers
  • Perthshire and Highland estates, for shooting, stalking and fishing: see helicopter charter for country sports
  • We plan the route and the landing with you and with the owner of the site

Where we can land

Landing sites in Scotland

These come from each place’s own website. Rules and hours change, so we check them again for your date, and every landing is subject to permission.

Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire

The hotel’s own travel page says arrangements can be made to land helicopters at the hotel. It gives no pad position, fee or procedure, so we agree all three with the hotel.

Dundee Airport (EGPN)

Run by the Highlands and Islands Airports group, whose general aviation page asks for advance notice by a prior permission form and names its handling arrangements. It is the nearest airport to St Andrews.

Inverness Airport (EGPE)

The group’s general aviation page lists the ground handlers at Inverness. Helicopter arrangements are agreed in advance and we handle that for you.

Edinburgh Airport (EGPH)

The main airport for the capital. Private and business aviation arrangements are agreed in advance and we handle that for you.

St Andrews and the Old Course

We do not plan landings at the Old Course, St Andrews Links or inside the Open grounds. We land at an airport or a confirmed site nearby and arrange a car.

A private estate

Landing at an estate or a lodge needs the owner’s permission and a suitable site, and we ask for both for you. Read can a helicopter land at my venue?

How it works

Cost

How much is a helicopter to Scotland?

There is no single price for this flight, because it changes with the helicopter, the date, how many of you are flying, how long the helicopter waits and the landing fees at the other end.

Helicopters are priced by flying time, not by the mile. Tell us your plan and a charter specialist sends one clear price, any time of day or night.

  • The type of helicopter, from the AS355 to the Agusta 109 Grand and the H145
  • The date and the time of day
  • One way, return, or a return with waiting time or an overnight stay
  • Landing and handling fees at the other end

Before you fly

What to know before flying to Scotland

Where we land

We agree the airport, the hotel or the estate with you when you book, and confirm it with the owner for your date. Every landing is subject to permission, and we always agree a plan B.

Luggage and weights

Soft-sided bags fit a helicopter hold better than hard suitcases. Tell us how many bags you have, and each passenger’s weight, when you book, and we will confirm that everything fits.

Weather

Helicopters fly in suitable weather only. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing, and we will work with you on the earliest alternative. Check conditions on our Battersea Heliport weather page. See also helicopter charter and the weather.

Timing and booking ahead

Arrive at the London Heliport 10 minutes before departure. Book as early as you can for The Open, the Edinburgh festivals and the shooting season, and earlier for groups or larger helicopters.

A car at the other end

Our partner Executive Global Travel can meet you with a chauffeur car, timed to the helicopter, so if the flight moves, the car moves with it.

Getting to the heliport

The London Heliport is on the south bank of the Thames at Bridges Court, Battersea SW11 3BE. See getting there and the opening hours.

Questions

Helicopter charter to Scotland: your questions answered

Still unsure? Call +44 20 7781 8094 any time.

How long does a helicopter from London to Scotland take?

About 2 hr to 2 hr 35 in the air to Edinburgh, 2 hr 10 to 2 hr 45 to Gleneagles and St Andrews, and 2 hr 40 to 3 hr 25 to Inverness, depending on the helicopter, the routing and the wind. Add 10 minutes to arrive at the heliport before departure.

How much does a helicopter to Scotland cost?

The price changes with the helicopter, the date, how many of you are flying, the route, any fuel stop, any waiting time or overnight stay and the landing fees. Tell us your plan and we send one clear quote. See helicopter hire prices for examples of other routes.

Does the flight need a fuel stop?

A flight of this length may include one. We plan the route and any stop with you and with the flight crew, and the quote shows it, so there are no surprises on the day.

Can a helicopter land at Gleneagles?

Gleneagles’ own travel page says arrangements can be made to land helicopters at the hotel. It does not give a pad position or a fee, so we agree both with the hotel before we promise a landing.

Can I fly by helicopter to The Open at St Andrews?

The Open comes to the Old Course in July 2027, and the organiser lists 11 to 18 July. Its page says nothing about helicopters, and we do not plan landings at the course or inside the grounds, so we look at a nearby airport or site and arrange a car. Tell us the day and we check what is possible.

Is a helicopter quicker than the train to Edinburgh?

Yes. The fastest trains from King’s Cross to Edinburgh take about 4 hr 10 according to timetable sites. The helicopter takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours in the air and leaves when you are ready.

Can I fly one way, or return the same day?

Both are possible. A same-day return to Scotland makes a very long day, so most guests stay a night. Tell us your plan and we plan around the daylight and the sites’ hours.

Can you carry golf clubs or shooting equipment?

Usually, yes. Tell us what you are bringing and each passenger’s weight when you book, and we confirm the right helicopter. Firearms and ammunition have strict rules, so tell us before you book and we agree them with the crew.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing. We work with you to find the earliest suitable alternative. See helicopter charter and the weather.

How many people can you carry?

The AS355 carries up to 5 passengers, the Agusta 109 Grand up to 6 and the H145 up to 8. For larger parties we can use more than one helicopter.
