Can a helicopter land at your venue? · updated 20 October 2026 · 5 minute read · by the Battersea Helicopter team

In short

A helicopter can land at a private site in the UK if the landowner gives permission, the site is suitable and the pilot judges it safe on the day. The site needs a flat, firm, clear area with safe approach paths; the pilot makes the final decision, and the charter company assesses the site beforehand.

Landowner permission

A helicopter cannot simply land anywhere. The landowner must give permission, whether the site is a field, a hotel lawn, a golf club or an event venue. Aerodromes and airfields work on a prior-permission-required (PPR) basis, which means you must obtain permission before landing there.

What makes a site suitable

  • A flat, firm, clear area of suitable size, free of loose debris that the rotors could blow around.
  • Safe approach and departure paths without tall trees, wires, masts or buildings in the way.
  • Space to keep people, vehicles and animals well clear while the rotors turn.
  • A surface that is not soft or waterlogged.

We ask for the postcode or what3words location, photographs and a rough idea of the size of the area, and we confirm with the pilot whether the site is suitable.

The 500-foot rule and landing

The UK rules of the air say that aircraft must not fly closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle or structure, except when taking off or landing. This is why helicopters spend most of a journey well above the ground and why a landing site needs a clear approach.

Noise and neighbours

A helicopter landing is noisy for a few minutes. Tell neighbours in advance if you are planning a landing at a home or a venue in a built-up area, and plan the timing to limit disturbance. Planning rules can limit how often land is used for landings, so take advice if you expect repeat use.

Landing fees and alternatives

Landing at an airfield or heliport usually attracts a landing fee. If your venue is unsuitable, a nearby airfield with a short road transfer often works. For flights to race meetings, see flying to the races by helicopter, and for the process see how to book a private helicopter.

Frequently asked questions

Can a helicopter land at my house?

Possibly, if you own the land or have the owner’s permission, the area is large, flat and clear, and the pilot judges it safe. The charter company assesses the site beforehand.

Do I need planning permission for a helicopter landing?

It depends on how often land is used for landings. Occasional use is treated differently from regular use, so take advice if you expect repeat landings.

Can a helicopter land at a hotel or wedding venue?

Often, with the owner’s permission and a suitable lawn or field. Ask the venue first, then tell us.

What is PPR?

Prior permission required: you must obtain permission from an airfield before landing there.
